Process safety management requires proper evaluation, identification and checking up of the complete operating process. Process hazard analysis, also known as PHA, in short, is the whole analysis of the operating process. Well, you cannot think that Process Hazard analysis and Process safety management are more or less the same. Process Hazard Analysis is just one of the 14 components of process safety management.
The 14 elements of the process safety management are guided by occupational safety and health administration. The 14 elements are discussed as follows:
  • Process Safety Information
The information about the safety processes should be noted down in written form and relayed to all the concerned employees, staffs and other members. This is the first step of carrying out a process hazard analysis.
  • Process Hazard Analysis
In this component, the employers of the workplace must go through and evaluate each and every hazardous process for safety purposes. This removes most of the chances of any mishap.
  • Operating Procedures
Before carrying out the operating procedures for real, they should be written down and evaluated carefully.
  • Incident Investigation
Even after excessive care, incidents can occur. This seems almost unavoidable, but it is possible to avoid something from repeating itself. This is why every incident needs to be checked and evaluated carefully so that it does not repeat. The investigation should be carried out in-depth of the happenings.
  • Management of Any Change
There might be any changes added to the processes after the management safety measures have been taken. For that purpose, these changes need to be evaluated and checked carefully before the process is executed.
  • Mechanical checking
After the processes are checked for safety and security, the other important measure is to check all the mechanical parts involved in the whole operation.
  • Employee Participation
Employees must participate in the process of safety management programs without any carelessness.
  • No Trade Secrets
The trade secret should be a measure to inform things or hide them. Every bit of information should be disclosed.
  • Compliance Audits
Audits need to be conducted to check the proper functioning and checking of everything.
  • Training of employees
Employees must be trained in every work related to hazardous processes.
  • Knowledgeable Contractors
The contractors also need to be well informed and have knowledge about process safety management.
  • Hot Work permit
The permits should be issued for the working on site.
  • Pre-Startup Safety Review
One last check needs to be carried out.
  • Emergency Planning and Response
Emergency measures need to be taught to all.
